Assembling Something Sustainable: Creating A Greener Construction Business

There are a lot of construction business owners and contractors who are starting to come face to face with a truth that might be difficult for some to swallow. The world and perhaps they themselves are coming to see the importance of living more sustainable lives. But the truth is that the construction business alone is one of the greatest sources of waste in the business world. It’s a conundrum but it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your values for your work or stop working in the construction industry. Instead, look at how you can implement greener practices into the business.

    Know your demands

The first way to make sure that you are doing things in the most absolutely efficient ways is to learn exactly what you need. In terms of materials, you should try to not end up with any more than must go into the building. But the same goes for your equipment. Having to buy new machinery for a job might not only be less sustainable, but it can be less cost-effective. If you need equipment only temporarily, then use some that’s already in the market and hire it.

    Talk to your suppliers

We can’t expect anyone to know all the most efficient materials or equipment they could be using in their job. If we recommended them here, then we would probably be giving recommendations that are out of date within months. Plenty of construction suppliers are expanding into more eco-friendly materials and machinery. Talk to your supply chain and stress that you are moving to a more sustainable focus. They are your best bet in staying up to date.

Making sure your waste goes to the right place

Naturally, you won’t be able to entirely avoid waste in the vast majority of construction businesses. What you can avoid, however, is the possibility that your business is only contributing to our still fast-growing landfills. Don’t be lazy with how you deal with your waste. Find construction and demolition waste recycling services near you. Make sure that your leftover materials are being dealt with in the most responsible way possible.

    Be careful with your water

It’s not just about material and carbon use, either. You should also be concerned with how your business uses water. First, ensure that any water pipes used are thoroughly sealed and in no danger of contaminating the environment. You should also look into using less water where possible. For instance, are there any processes you could just as easily use recycled grey water for?

    Make green your niche

If you’re contracted to do work, there is only so much you can do to make a more sustainable business. You have the needs and demands of the client to take into account, too. However, you could instead target a different kind of client. Make green construction a key part of your marketing and the services that you offer. There are plenty of clients out there looking to be more sustainable themselves. Finding a niche is a good way to set yourself apart from your competitors, too. You don’t have to turn away existing clients, but it can help you slowly shift your business to more eco-friendly building projects as you work.
