‘I have too much money!’ you’re yelling in your hotel room, frustrated in another country. It’s the equivalent of having one week to spend $10,000 in Australia. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. If it’s money that you need to burn, then check out these suggestions.
Food and Drinks:
This is a no brainer. Splurge on food and drinks if you have excessive cash. Did you feel funny about spending $100 on a dessert when at home? Well, you’re not at home – so treat yourself! The point is that you eat things that no one will be eating anywhere else, so don’t hesitate – just do!
Buskers:
The best thing about any country is its buskers. Spend a day wandering the city, keeping an eye out for particularly gifted or strange buskers. Man playing the flute badly? Throw him some coins. Lady krumping on top of a pole? Throw her a few dollars to cover her hospital bill if she falls. The best thing is that there is no such thing as too much money here – you can give buskers you love as much money as you would like to keep them doing what they’re doing.
Handmade Goods:
If you are in a developing country and you feel like helping its people out, it’s advisable not to give to beggar children. After all, there is the possibility that they are being coerced into it, or that their family will rely on such an unstable way of getting income. If you do want to help out individuals, look for handmade items. Not only are they unique, but it goes a long way to helping their families. If you’re feeling generous, leave a tip; if you still want to pinch pennies (in which case, why are you reading this?), then resist the urge to haggle – they do need the money more than you.
Doing Something Unforgettable:
Take a horse ride around the city. Go bungee jumping. Take an architectural tour. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you enjoy yourself and you have a story to tell afterwards!
Souvenirs:
If you’re pressed for time, convert the bulk of your foreign cash back, bringing a little back for your family. While doing this on a large scale is not great for the local economy, a few dollars shouldn’t hurt anyone too much. It may seem like a cheap gift, but there can be nothing better than a trillion dollar note from Zimbabwe.
These suggestions should help you free up some important wallet real estate in Dapto to Detroit to Brooklyn, there are plenty of opportunities to spend your leftover cash (that is, if you don’t want to take it home and save it for the next trip!)
